*Note: Tacoma Youth Theatre's original adaptation of The Adventures of Tom Sawyer welcomes young actors of all genders, races, ethnicities & faith traditions. Our adaptation partly centers around growing up in a small Missouri Town in the 1840s and partly details a murder witnessed by Tom & Huck and the subsequent trial. There is a lot of warm humor in this story, however, I am including a content notification for: on-stage murder, one character experiencing alcoholism, & several scenes involving Christian faith services/sunday school.

Tacoma Youth Theatre's The Tempest is in Shakespeare's original language but abridged for young actors. A simple summary & character list are below. This is an advanced program for actors ready to explore the challenge of both Shakespeare's dialogue and the independent memorization and character work that a once-weekly, complicated play will require.

Brief Summary of The Tempest:

"The Tempest is a play about magic, betrayal, love and forgiveness. It is set on an island somewhere near Italy where Prospero, the one-time Duke of Milan, and his teenage daughter, Miranda, live with a sprite called Ariel and a half-human being, called Caliban. Prospero is a powerful magician who creates a storm, or tempest, that sets the scene for the play. In the events that follow we see a plot to murder the King of Naples, a drunken scheme to kill Prospero and a romance between Miranda and the King’s son, Ferdinand. In the end everyone is forgiven and they all set sail for home"

Characters:

  • Prospero
  • Miranda
  • Ariel
  • Caliban
  • Ferdinand
  • Alonso
  • Antonio
  • Sebastian
  • Gonzalo
  • Stephano
  • Trinculo
